《盜夢空間》劇情遊走於夢境與現實之間，被定義爲“發生在意識結構內的當代動作科幻片”。
多姆·柯布(萊昂納多·迪卡普里奧飾)是一個經驗老道的竊賊。在人們精神最爲脆弱的時候，他潛入別人夢中，竊取潛意識中有價值的信息和祕密。
在一次任務中，柯布和他的同伴亞瑟(約瑟夫·高登·萊維特飾)，因柯布的潛意識——柯布的亡妻梅爾(瑪麗昂·歌迪亞飾)的阻擾，未能成功竊取僱主所需要的資料，從而面臨着兩天之內被殺的危險。爲了保命，他們的另外一個同伴把他們出賣給了之前他們竊取夢境的對象——齋藤(渡邊謙飾)，齊藤找到柯布和亞瑟，希望他們能夠爲自己服務，也就是找到全球壟斷巨頭的兒子費舍爾(希裏安·墨菲飾 )，在費舍爾的頭腦中植入遣散公司的意念，從而消滅自己的競爭對手，如果成功，將帶他回國。由於柯布迫切地想回家見自己的孩子，他答應了齊藤的請求，找到了“僞裝者”埃姆斯、“藥劑師”尤斯福、“造夢師”阿里阿德涅。買下了整個航空公司，讓費舍爾的私人飛機故障檢修，然後在費舍爾飛往洛杉磯的途中實施了這個計劃。柯布等一行六人將費舍爾帶入了事先造好的夢境，對費舍爾進行意念的培養，然而費舍爾先前曾受過防止在夢中被襲擊的專業訓練，於是在第一層夢境中，他們受到費舍爾潛意識保衛隊的猛烈攻擊，齊藤受傷。但最後，成功地將遣散公司的意念植入費舍爾腦中，化解了費舍爾與其父親的矛盾。在這中間，柯布又受到了愛妻梅爾的`阻撓，使計劃幾乎失敗，但柯布最終戰勝了自己，擺脫了自己頭腦中亡妻幻影的迷惑，堅強的度過了永遠迷失在夢裏的危險，並從潛意識的邊緣救出了迷失的齊藤。電影在最後留給大家一個懸念。柯布在“回到現實”與孩子團聚之後，用陀螺測試是否還在夢境中，電影突然結束，到底是在現實，還是夢境? 然而，是夢境還是現實，都已經不重要了。(確切地說，在最後的時候，陀螺轉速變慢，中心軸左右搖擺，想必是要停止轉動的前兆，可判斷爲現實。只是電影突然停止，不細心的話估計沒看出來。還有，柯布的世界裏是沒有孩子的臉，電影裏有提到在夢裏柯布每次想叫孩子孩子就會轉身跑掉，但和孩子團聚之後孩子轉過了臉，由此判斷是現實的。)
